What exactly is Learning RX? It is a brain training center that provides a personalized training program targeted at your child’s cognitive weaknesses that make it difficult for him or her to learn. The following information is taken directly from one of their brochures:

What is brain training?

Brain training is a system of highly targeted exercises used to change your brain’s capacity to think and learn. Science has proven that brain training can strengthen learning and reading skills and increase IQ.

How does it work?

Research has identified cognitive skills as the root source of learning. Brain training describes a set of revolutionary new techniques developed by brain researchers and professionals that test, target and strengthen specific mental skills. If mental skills - such as auditory processing and memory - are strong, learning comes easily and naturally. If skill weaknesses remain hidden, a student will often face chronic learning, reading, and performance struggles. Strengthening weak brain skills is the key to permanently overcoming those struggles.

I first found out about Learning RX when I was having a difficult time teaching one of my sons to read. My husband and I believed that there had to be a root cause for his reading and learning difficulties, so we began researching. Then, we came across the website of Learning RX. Thankfully, there was a training center not too far from our home. We scheduled a preliminary appointment in which he would take a professional skills test. This test would pinpoint which of his cognitive skills were weak. After this appointment, we met with the Director of the center to review his test results. No doubt, we discovered exactly why he struggled with reading and learning altogether. We were so relieved to finally find the root cause of his reading challenges. The center offered a personalized brain-training program that would target his weak cognitive skills (such as processing speed, working memory, and audio processing speed) in order to change his brain’s capacity to think and learn. We decided to put him in a 24-week training program at the training center four times a week.

When he was just half way through the program, he had already experienced positive effects from the brain training. In fact, he immediately took on a positive and enthusiastic attitude toward learning the first week of his training. Before this time, he was discouraged when trying to learn anything. He labeled himself “a forgetter” and displayed a defeatist attitude. Now, he had hope of overcoming his deficiencies, his confidence level soared as well as his ability to read.

After my son completed the six months of brain training, we were so thrilled with the dramatic improvements in his cognitive (memory, processing speed, etc.) skills. Before he began the program, he was not able to sound out or blend three letter words (at the age of 8), and he didn’t have the memory capacity to really retain math facts. His confidence level was so low before he started the training because of these evident learning challenges that he faced. However, after completing the twenty-four week ReadRX program, he is now reading fluently, and he has the cognitive capacity to blend any word if he gets stuck. Also, my son enjoys math now! With his memory and processing speed improvements, he has a higher level of confidence when learning anything. He now has a sense of hope and more motivation because he’s had the necessary training to overcome these deficient cognitive skills. This so exciting to us as parents! His extreme frustration with learning and reading is now gone, and he is set up for success!
